What is Crisis?

A crisis is an internal reaction to stressors when normal coping mechanisms have broken down. The Chinese character for the word crisis is a combination of two symbols, danger and opportunity. A crisis is time limited and pushes for a resolution, which could be positive or negative in its outcome.

Any life event can take on crisis proportions if it is experienced as sudden, intense, unexpected, or deeply emotionally charged. It can feel overwhelming to us, leaving us unable to cope or to adjust to the situation. Wave after wave of emotion sweeps over us and we are unable to predict when or even if the intense situation is going to end.

Without answers to these important questions, we are left feeling helpless. We simply do not know what to do to control the situation. Thus, any event can be a crisis if it diminishes our ability to make sense of what is happening to us. In short, a crisis immobilizes us.

The Wilson Crisis Center can help put the pieces together to deal with that crisis. If you or someone you know is experiencing a crisis and needs help, please contact us immediately at 252-237-5156.

Calling the crisis line provides an opportunity for a person to talk about their problems and explore options. Often, just talking through a problem helps the caller. If further services are needed, callers are linked with appropriate resources for their specific problems.
